Assassin’s Creed Shadows looks like a promising entry in the franchise, but fans are upset with Ubisoft’s business practices, which have been well-documented at this point. None of this is very surprising, but fans are still annoyed at seeing the company continue to do this, despite most players hating it.
VGC reports that the physical version of this single-player game will require an internet connection, something many players see as a red flag. While gamers are used to getting day one patches these days, the fact that this is still implemented is annoying.
That’s not the only annoying Ubisoft business practice Assassin’s Creed Shadows has, since there are also a number of special editions to purchase. Granted, these are usually optional and are for hardcore fans who want everything, but the fact that Ubisoft keeps encouraging this behavior is exhausting.
Fans of the gaming industry know this isn’t anything new with Ubisoft, as the company did this with Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and the upcoming Star Wars Outlaws. Unfortunately, this has proven to be a successful format that Ubisoft has implemented and that won’t be stopping anytime soon.
Just to be clear, Ubisoft isn’t the only company guilty of this, as SEGA, EA, 2K, and so much more also participate in these practices. However, Ubisoft is an easy outlier for this since they frequently release video games at an alarming rate. It’s a shame too, because Assassin’s Creed Shadows actually looks like a quality release and the renewed focus on stealth has fans excited.
To be fair, the company has also worked on more experimental games recently. Earlier this year, Ubisoft released the excellent Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, a metroidvania that fans ate up. We’re also getting The Rogue Prince of Persia this month, which is a roguelite take on the character and looks like a quality title in its own right.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be coming to PS5, Xbox Series, and PC on November 15.
