Winter solstice is the day with the shortest period of daylight and longest night of the year when the Sun is at its lowest daily maximum elevation in the sky.
Now items have started to appear in the Nook Shop!

New items have arrived in the shop related to the Winter-Solstice event including the 'Winter-solstice crown'.
This item will be available until the 6th July 2020.

Winter Solstice Festival
Data miner @FireMonkey__ found in a deep dive that there is an event called "Winter Solstice Festival". The description that accompanies it reads the following:
"The day of the winter solstice has the shortest period of daylight. In the Southern Hemisphere, folks prepare for the cold weather with sweaters like this to send Mr. Winter running!"

When Is Winter Solstice In Animal Crossing New Horizons?
It's unknown when the event will take place, in past games 'Winter Solstice' took place from the 21st-22nd December.
In the real world, it is set to take place on the 21st December 2020.
This event is available in all versions of the game.
Rewards
The mascot for this event in the past was Isabelle.
Players would need to talk to her from 6am-12am to receive a blue light stick.
