Since launching in October 2019, Call of Duty Mobile has become one of the most popular titles in the history of the franchise. The mobile version of the shooter combines features from several annual releases in addition to its very own battle royale.
In its debut year, over 260 million players downloaded the game in addition to generating $500k in revenue. In the following years, popularity continues to rise and numbers are creeping towards levels that annual releases reach.
In Activision's annual report, the publisher reveals the game has generated over 650 million downloads since launch.
COD Mobile Generates 650 Million Downloads
First reported by VGC, the increase in downloads is due to COD Mobile launching in China, a huge mobile market. In addition to a huge number of downloads, Activision says the game had a "record year" in 2021. According to the publisher, over $1bn in consumer spending took place.
"The number of people experiencing Call of Duty on mobile each month almost matched those playing on console and PC in 2021," states Activision.
The news is certainly promising for the publisher. It announced a mobile version of Warzone is in development, giving mobile players even more ways to get their fix of Call of Duty action.
With numerous crossovers ranging from the Saw movie franchise to the appearance of Snoop Dogg, it's hardly surprising to see COD Mobile generate huge revenue as players purchase a variety of cosmetic items.
This combined with mobile gaming increasing in popularity in addition to COD Mobile being free-to-play, it's not surprising to see numbers skyrocketing.
With Modern Warfare 2 releasing on PC and consoles this year, it will be interesting to see if COD Mobile continues its upward trajectory.
