DLC has been a great source of revenue for fighting games, and Mortal Kombat 1 seemed to be in trouble last November when rumours were going out that their planned Kombat Pack 3 had been cancelled.
As it turns out, the cancellation might not be true, and series co-creator Ed Boon has posted an update on his social media that makes fans hopeful for the future of MK1 DLC.
MK1 DLC Not Dead After All?
In a recent thread clearing out some things about the status of Mortal Kombat 1 moving forward, Boon has confirmed that there are still plans for future DLC.
Here’s his post:
So far, there is still one announced character that’s yet to come to the game, and that’s the T-1000 from Terminator 2: Judgement Day. The last DLC that was released was Conan the Barbarian, the second Arnold Schwarzenegger character to come to MK since the T-800 was released for Mortal Kombat 11.
Which Characters Can Fans Expect to Come in Future DLC?
While Boon didn’t drop any specific hints as to which characters could be coming in future DLC, the pattern of previous Kombat Packs could be a clue on what to expect should a Kombat Pack 3 be announced.
For context, the characters available for Kombat Pack 1 included:
- Homelander
- Peacemaker
- Ermac
- Quan Chi
- Omni-Man
- Takeda
Kombat Pack 2 featured:
- Sektor
- Cyrax
- Noob Saibot
- Ghostface
- Conan the Barbarian
- T-1000
At best, fans will see a mix of some original MK characters as well as some guest characters from other franchises. Bo Rai Cho has been a fan-favourite that hasn’t been playable since MKX, and several characters from previous eras of MK are sure to have their fans.
As for guest appearances, it does seem like the franchise loves to stay in the 80s era, seeing that 80s action has been a huge influence on the original MK franchise. It doesn’t matter which character, but Chuck Norris, Jackie Chan, Kurt Russell, and Bruce Willis feel like they have roles that could come to the game.
Mortal Kombat also has a love for the horror genre, and with the game already having gone through several horror icons like Freddy, Jason, the Xenomorph, and Predator, maybe some have yet to make the roster.
Surely some fans would love to have some playable cenobites from the Hellraiser franchise, and WB does have the rights to IT and a playable Pennywise the Clown would fit right into Mortal Kombat. While he’s mostly a comedic character, Michael Keaton’s Beetlejuice may also be the right kind of kooky for MK.
Until the release of the T-1000, fans will just have to guess, but Boon does love to post character polls on his social media to give audiences an idea of who might be coming to the hero roster.
Mortal Kombat 1 is now available for PC, Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and Nintendo Switch.
