It Takes Two from Hazelight Studios made a splash when it was released in 2021. By 2024, the game had sold over 20 million units.
With the success of recent video game titles right now, word is going around that there’s actually an It Takes Two movie in the works, and it’s being written by the duo that delivered the Sonic the Hedgehog movies.
It Takes Two Movie in the Works?
In a recent interview with IGN, Sonic the Hedgehog writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller were asked about upcoming projects. Casey confirmed, “I was going to say, we've already written a script for It Takes Two, which hopefully we'll get some good news on moving forward in the next year.”
They offered no other update than that, but it was reported way back in 2022 that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is producing the movie for Amazon Studios, and the movie will also have Josef Fares and Oskar Wolontis from Hazelight Studios attached as executive producers for the movie.
There is also speculation that the Rock could be attached to play one of the leads, but nothing official has been confirmed.
What is It Takes Two About?
For context, It Takes Two is a cooperative platform game that follows the story of two parents magically transformed into dolls during their own divorce and must learn to cooperate to regain their bodies.
The unique aspect of the game is that there is no single-player mode. Cooperation is key to progression; players must find someone to play with online or have someone play beside them on the couch.
Throughout the game, players navigate intricate platforming levels that require the cooperation of both characters. This delivers a meta-narrative that is complimented by the gameplay. Admittedly, it would probably get frustrating if both players didn’t have the same skill level when it came to platform games (though some say that playing as the woman always results in harder levels).
It Takes Two Reception
When it was released, It Takes Two received critical acclaim and won Game of the Year at the Game Awards in 2021. It also won the same award at the 25th Annual DICE Awards. While initially released for PlayStation 4|5, PC, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One, the game was also released for the Nintendo Switch the following year.
In addition to its gameplay, It Takes Two has been lauded for its unique world and insightful meta-narrative about a couple on the verge of divorce.
With a very story-driven game, it does seem like an It Takes Two movie would be an easy transition for filmmakers, but there is also the question of whether the movie could bring anything new to the table—like the Last of Us series managed to.
With the original game directors attached, it’s very likely the movie could be something both fans and newcomers can enjoy.
No release date has been announced for an It Takes Two movie, but based on the interview, it could be coming out in the next few years—possibly 2026.
