Obsidian’s Avowed is a lot like Skyrim, much like how The Outer Worlds was clearly inspired by the Fallout games, but in space. While the Xbox exclusive is set to be an epic RPG with numerous quests to complete, don’t expect to get lost in it like an Elder Scrolls game.
Carrie Patel, the RPG’s director, spoke with Game Informer (via VGC) about the overall time to beat it, comparing the length to The Outer Worlds. Rather than go the Bethesda route and give players an unpolished 100-hour adventure, they’re going to give fans a smoother experience that won’t eat up your weekends.
“Players can expect a roughly similar experience, just like The Outer Worlds, depending on what kind of difficulty they play on, and how thoroughly they explore and invest inside content, versus just sticking to the main crit path missions,” Patel told Game Informer.
Shorter games have been on the upswing as of late, so fans might be happy seeing Avowed follow in the same footsteps as The Outer Worlds. Based on Patel’s wording, it seems that fans will still get a lot out of the game if they explore the world.
The Outer Worlds was a 20-30 hour adventure to most players, with more hours being added after DLC was released. While that might seem short for RPG standards, it’s a perfectly reasonable time for most gamers so this is a good thing. If anyone wants a longer RPG to devote hundreds of hours to, they can always play Skyrim.
Avowed has been a fan-favorite since its reveal, with fans anticipating to see how Obsidian would make their own Elder Scrolls game. Fans still love the original Obsidian Fallout games, including Fallout: New Vegas, so we hope they do the fantasy RPG genre justice.
No released date for Avowed has been revealed, though the Xbox exclusive is slated for a Fall 2024 release. This new RPG will be available on Xbox Series and PC.
