When you start off on a Nautiloid and take your very first steps, you might begin to wonder how to heal in Baldur's Gate 3. Not every class has the ability to heal in the game, which is why it is important to delve deeper into the class mechanics and also understand how the resting system works in the game.
If you did not start off as a Cleric, Bard, Paladin, or any other class that has some form of healing, don't worry. The game lets you explore Faerun with a party of four, and you can easily recruit a healer early in the game. You could also have one of your co-op buddies play a custom character that has the ability to heal your party.
Before we dig deeper into how to heal, check out our Baldur’s Gate 3 release time countdown to know exactly when you can start playing the released version of the game. We also have a character creation guide in case you want to understand the intricacies that each class offers.
How do I heal in Baldur's Gate 3?
There are three sources of healing in Baldur's Gate 3, which are as follows:
Skills
The easiest way to heal is through the spells and skills of your Companions. Shadowheart is an unmissable Companion who can be recruited very early in the game and we recommend recruiting her unless you are playing a Cleric yourself.

Clerics are better at healing party members than other classes, so having one in your party is a good idea. You can also play a Cleric yourself or get one of your friends to play the class for a comfortable experience.
Resting
The game allows you to Short Rest twice every in-game day, which restores some HP and refills some of your spell slots. Long Rests on the other hand require 40 Supplies, and allow you to completely fill up your HP and refill your spells. You might be wondering what happens if you run out of supplies. You can still Long Rest without using supplies, but you will restore only half your HP and some spells. Long Resting without resources will not refresh your Short Rest Charges.
You can rest by clicking on the Campfire icon at the bottom right corner of your screen and choosing the Short Rest or Long Rest options whenever you need to heal up or refresh your spells.
Potions
Throughout your playthrough, you will find Potions from fallen enemies, crates, and some vendors might even sell them to you. You can stock up on Potions for situations where you don’t want to rest.
