How to release Shadowheart in Baldur's Gate 3

To release Shadowheart in Baldur's Gate 3, you must first locate her. You'll find her trapped inside a pod on the Mind Flayer ship's upper chamber, following the tutorial encounter with Lae'zel.

Upon initiating a conversation with her, Shadowheart will request your help in freeing her, while Lae'zel may advise you to ignore her due to the ship's looming state. Ultimately, the decision rests with you, and you can choose to heed her plea or leave her for now.

If you decide to free her, head immediately to the door located right off the control panel. At the far side of this room, beyond another trapped person, you'll come across a Dead Thrall with an Eldritch Rune on their body. This key is essential for the next step.

Now, search for the chest named "Elaborate Reliquary," situated in the same room as Shadowheart's pod. Opening this chest will reveal an Eldritch Rune, a crucial item for rescuing Shadowheart.

Head back into the previous room with the vocal Shadowheart and interact with the console. Follow the text prompts to insert the Eldritch Rune to liberate Shadowheart from her captivity. Unless you tell her not to, she'll join your party.

Can you recruit Shadowheart later?

Because Baldur's Gate 3 is a game built on branching paths and multiple choices, rejecting Shadowheart's proposal to join your team will cause her to leave for good.

But fate works in strange ways. Once you complete the battle at the helm, you'll find Shadowheart on the beach you arrive at, ready to join you again. You can send her on her own path yet again, but she suggests you could meet again. And you probably will. And you'll likely be free to reject her time and again.
