Battlefield has jumped around time periods in recent years, but it looks as though it'll be returning to a modern setting, for the first time since Battlefield Hardline, with Battlefield 6.
Tom Henderson, better known as LongSensationYT, retweeted a tweet regarding Battlefield 3 stating "You'll be a happy bunny next year then :)".

Following up with more clarification, he confirmed that he wasn't hinting at a remaster and specifically noted the setting and direction.
Elaboration - I was simply referring to the setting and direction of the next Battlefield game, not a remaster. https://t.co/uKNOAKXBZ0

Originally released in 2011 (and competing with Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3), Battlefield 3 offered a great multiplayer suite alongside a disappointing single-player campaign.
At the time, it offered almost unmatched visuals, taking place in the present day.
Needless to say, we'd recommend taking this with a hefty handful of salt, but it's not outside of the realms of possibility. 2013's Battlefield 4 (a launch title for PS4 and Xbox One) was also set in a contemporary period, while 2016's Battlefield 1 returned to WW1 and Battlefield V took us back to WW2.
