The best gaming mouse is an essential tool when it comes to getting the most out of your favourite video game titles.

A great gaming mouse offers customisation, optimal DPI, and fits well to the type of grip you're using. Any mice deemed the 'best' will also feature high-quality, durable builds for longer lifespans, plus tend to include elements like RGB to help give your setup a distinctive look alongside some of the best gaming keyboards and monitors around.

However, finding a mouse with all those features, and choosing one to work effectively with games like Fortnite, Apex Legends, and more isn't easy. That's why we've rounded up a comprehensive list of mice to choose from, all of which stand out from the competition in their own distinct categories.

1. ASUS ROG Gladius III

Best gaming mouse for competitive gaming

If you're looking for a fantastic wired mouse to utilise during those all-important competitive matches, the ASUS ROG Gladius III looks to be your best bet.

For starters, its 19,000 DPI sensor is super-sensitive, making it a great pick for esports, and can actually be cranked up even further to 26,000 within the bundled ROG Armoury software.

You'll find absolutely no latency as this mouse offers a purely hard-wired connection via a USB-A port, too. It doesn't weigh much either, with the Gladius III clocking in at 79g, making this quite the nimble mouse too, not just in terms of sensitivity.

Those who like some customisation will also be pleased as you can change the switches inside this Asus mouse, largely thanks to the fact they're hot-swappable.

In the box, you'll find some Omron ones as replacements for the original switches inside the mouse which aren't as quiet, but still look to offer some great and rather clicky performance.

2. Razer Deathadder V2 Pro

Best gaming mouse for FPS

The Razer Deathadder V2 Pro looks to be an incredible pick for those wanting a handy mouse for FPS games.

It's the latest iteration of Razer's own gaming veteran, cutting the cord on the DeathAdder V2 and its own predecessor, the DeathAdder Elite.

What this means is that you're getting the same comfortable contoured curves with rubberised grips for an ergonomic design, just with beefed-up internals.

Razer's Focus+ sensor is what powers the Deathadder V2 Pro, giving it 20,000 DPI to play with, and a weight of 88g also makes this one of the lighter mice around, too.

The battery life here looks to be exemplary with 70 hours of usage with full Chroma lighting, and the connection on offer through the bundled HyperSpeed receiver or Bluetooth should provide practically zero latency, making this a close contender for the best mouse for FPS gaming.

A quick guide to gaming mice

If you're new to the world of gaming mice, keep reading for a quick breakdown of what to look out for.

DPI/ CPI: How sensitive the mouse is - as a very general rule of thumb, the higher the better.

Poll Rate: The speed at which the mouse reports its position. Faster the better typically speaking.

Grip: You'll notice gaming mice are shaped differently. These different shapes work with different ways of holding the mouse itself. Palm, Claw, and Fingertip are the three main types of grip you'll want to find the right shape for.

Jitter: When your cursor jumps around all over the place...aka, the LAST thing you want when trying to accurate!

IPS: The higher the number, the better the mouse can keep track when being used super fast!

Lift-off Distance: Literally the distance at which you 'lift' the mouse 'off' the pad and it doesn't register. If you're playing at low sensitivities, and find yourself 'resetting' the mouse by lifting it off the pad before another scroll, then you'll want a low lift-off distance.

Acceleration: To do with the mouse sensor and the 'speed' of the cursor compared to the speed of the hand movement. If the mouse shows this quality, then the distance the cursor moves is likely affected by the speed you move it.

Price points: You can get a quality mouse for under 50, but if you want something heavily customisable then you may have to shell out nearer the 100+ mark.
