Best Ultrawide Monitor 2022: Our Top 21:9 Picks

If you're looking for the best ultrawide monitor, we've got you covered right here.

Ultrawide monitors have seen a surge in popularity thanks to numerous AAA titles being playable in a 21:9 aspect ratio. Ultrawide monitors are great for more immersive gaming, and also offer up huge desktop real-estate for productivity, design, video editing and more.

Since Xbox Series X and PS5 don't 'officially' support ultrawide, these monitors are more for the PC owners out there, and we've selected what we think are some of the best available, based on specs, reviews, and features they offer.

Stick around after our list, as we've included some upcoming ultrawide monitors you'll want to keep your eye on, plus we answer some of the most frequently asked questions so you can make the best decision possible.

Let's get to it, here are our best ultrawide monitor contenders.

Brand: LG | Screen Size: 38" | Resolution: 3840 x 1600 | Aspect Ratio: 21:9 | Refresh Rate: 160hz | Response Time: 1ms | Brightness: 450cd/m2 | Color Support: DCI-P3 98% | Panel Type: IPS

LG's 38GN950 is a bit of a beast, packing a super low response time, Display HDR600, and a whopping 160hz refresh rate overclocked.

It's also a bit of a dark horse when it comes to design, in the sense that much like many of LG's monitors it's deceptively minimal. This makes a real winner if you're building out a home setup that needs to function as both a gaming and working space.

It's also one of the bigger monitors on the list, which means more immersion and more of that wow factor when you install it.

Just make sure your monitor arm can handle the weight, as this comes in at a hefty 20.3 lbs.

Best Ultrawide Monitor BenQ - BenQ EX3501R

Brand: BenQ | Screen Size: 35" | Resolution: 3440 x 1440 | Aspect Ratio: 21:9 | Refresh Rate: 100hz | Curve: 1800R | Response Time: 4ms | Brightness: 300cd/m2 | Color Support: sRGB 100%

BenQ is a great brand for delivering quality at very reasonable price points, and this ultrawide monitor is yet another example of that.

What you're getting here is a good all-rounder which you can use for gaming or productivity.

In fact, as is the case with many BenQ monitors, you'll find some advanced eye-care solutions like BenQ's B.I Pus sensor, which can automatically adapt the brightness to your environment.

On top of that, you've got a USB-C port that can provide charging to devices, HDR, and one of the sleekest designs we've seen from BenQ to date.

Well worth considering if you want to experience ultrawide, without the ultra-high price tag.

For those who are looking to invest some serious cash into their next monitor, this Asus Ultrawide is one to consider on search.

Boasting an impressive 200hz refresh rate and surprisingly fast response time for a screen so large, this monitor is as much for gaming as it is consuming content.

Its DisplayHDR 1000 certification and 90% DCI-P3 ensure that you're getting showstopping contrast and a wide colour range to boot, which should make any of the epic AAA titles available in ultra-wide look fantastic.

Once again, the Asus Rog line delivers the goods, making this a strong contender for one of the best ultrawide monitors around.

Brand: AOC | Screen Size: 34" | Resolution: 3440 x 1440 | Aspect Ratio: 21:9 | Refresh Rate: 100hz | Response Time: 1ms | Brightness: 300 cd/m2

AOC are another great brand that, like BenQ, deliver quality at a reasonable price point. This monitor, in particular, has everything you need to experience ultrawide gaming if you don't mind making a couple of small concessions.

And we're talking very small here, as while this monitor may 'only' have a 100hz refresh rate, we think for most gamers that's more than enough to match up well with the types of games they'll be playing in ultrawide.

If you're building out your first setup or want to test the waters with ultra-wide, we'd say to give this monitor some thought.

Samsung's Odyssey G9 has attained almost mythical status as one of the most impressive, and massive, ultrawide monitors on the market.

It's huge, that's for sure, and you'll need to make sure you have the right monitor arm to support its weight, but if you've got the room it can be a gamechanger.

Packing 240hz, 1ms response time, and WQHD resolution, this is a good call for those with the right rig to match.

Thanks to Freesync Premium Pro and Gsync compatibility, visuals should be smooth and screen tearing reduced, ensuring you can game distraction-free.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are a ton of questions that can come to mind when selecting an ultrawide display, so let's answer a few so you can make an informed choice.

Is 34-inch ultrawide big enough?

Yes! It's actually surprisingly large for most people's setups. Think about how close you're sitting to the monitor and how big your desk is to get an idea.

You can even cut out a piece of cardboard to the dimensions and prop it up before you commit to save yourself having to return it.

Are ultrawide monitors better for your eyes?

There is some debate about this, but it really has to do with the curve more so than the ultrawide format itself.

Some people believe that since the curve mimics the natural curve of your eye, it is a more natural way of looking at things.

We'd say it's something to consider, but other eye care technology which you can find in many of BenQ's monitors may likely have a more pronounced effect.

Are there Ultra Wide 4K monitors?

So in short, no. 4K is often associated with 'high resolution, but it's actually defined as 4096 x 2160 pixels, which doesn't 'fit' with ultrawide ratios.

The good news is that you can still get a 4K worthy definition with anything labelled a 2160 pixel monitor, but they can be rare.

If you are dead-set on 4K, check out some of the latest HDMI 2.1 monitors here, which deliver 4K at up to 144hz, and are also compatible with PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Is 3440 x 1440 good for gaming?

It actually is, much like standard 1440p too. 1440p is a bit of a sweet spot for resolution and performance, and since some performance can be impacted due to the sheer size of an ultrawide monitor, it pays to make a couple of small concessions to keep things running smoothly.
