Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Here are some answers to some of the most asked questions surrounding Xbox Series X headsets, from compatibility to surround sound and much more.
Is Xbox making a new headset?
We don't know yet if Microsoft has official plans for the next Xbox wireless headset, but we have high hopes.
Much like the Xbox Elite controller series 3, it seems like the next logical step, but the Xbox Wireless Headset was released fairly recently, so we don't think it's due for a revamp anytime soon.
Will any wireless headset work with Xbox Series X?
Now, this is a tricky one! In short, no, which is why you'll see many headsets have versions for PS4 or PS5 and then a separate one for Xbox Series X.
There are some that cross over, but we advise checking each headset individually to see if it's compatible.
Wired 3.5mm connections are the safest bet if in doubt!
Is a bigger driver size better for a headset?
You may have seen us mention this quite a bit, and basically what we're referring to is the size of the diaphragm (which is what vibrates to create sound).
The bigger it is, generally speaking, the better. Going for something around 40 - 50mm, we'd say would be a good bet.
How can you get an Xbox Series X headset for cheap?
If you're looking for a great deal, we'd highly recommend checking out the major sales, especially Prime Day and Black Friday.
Headsets and headphones are some of the most popular items to go on sale, and it's not uncommon to find amazing deals on the best Razer headsets, Steelseries, Logitech, and more.
Will Xbox One headsets work on Series X?
For the most part, yes. Xbox is known for its backward compatibility, especially with hardware, and this does, of course, apply to most headsets.
If you want to take all the mystery out (and arguably spend less) we'd say go for a wired headset, which you can simply plug into the controller.
Do I need surround sound on an Xbox Series X headset?
Many of the best gaming headsets out there today feature a modicum of variants of virtual surround sound which in short is designed to increase the immersion factor.
If you want to feel like you're in the middle of a battlefield within an FPS title, then having a form of virtual surround sound can definitely be of major help.
You don't need to have virtual surround sound on your Xbox Series X headset though, and if you're playing competitively, some of the 'digital tricks' involved when creating surround sound can actually make sound quality worse, making it harder to hear enemy footsteps online for example.
Does THX spatial audio work on Xbox Series X?
Many of Razer's headsets feature their own form of spatial audio, known as THX Spatial Audio, and unfortunately, it doesn't work with Xbox Series X.
This is because this type of audio only works on a PC when the headset is plugged in and enabled through Razer's Synapse software.
Are all Xbox headsets Dolby Atmos?
In short, yes. All Xbox Series-compatible headsets should work with Dolby Atmos so you can experience the power of surround sound.
For reference, Dolby Atmos is a form of virtual surround sound that places audio in a 360-degree 'bubble' around you and can work with gaming headsets to provide a better sense of audio placement.
Should I get a wired or wireless headset for Xbox Series X?
Ultimately, whether to go for a wired or wireless headset is completely up to your individual preferences.
For most casual gamers, wired headsets will likely be the best choice as they are generally more affordable than wireless options.
However, if you're looking to enjoy the freedom that comes with a wireless headset and be able to move around between games then they can be well worth the extra cost.
Does Xbox Series X support 7.1 headsets?
Yes, the Xbox Series X does support 7.1 headsets, along with 5.1. You can get a pair with surround sound (wired or wireless, and it would work well with the console).
Is wired or wireless headset better for gaming?
Gamers often prefer a wired headset, because the chances of any disruptions or loss of connectivity are greatly reduced. However, wireless headsets are preferable if you want more mobility.
