Binding of Isaac Sequel

The Binding of Isaac creator Edmund McMillen has confirmed that a new installment in the series is bound to happen at some point. Since its original release in 2011, The Binding of Isaac has become one of the most influential roguelikes of all time. The 2014 remake, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, introduced a new engine that made expansions like Afterbirth and Repentance possible.

Rebirth has made a name for itself in the genre, so it’s no surprise fans are curious about where McMillen takes things from here. When asked about a potential sequel in a recent TikTok post, McMillen didn’t dodge the question. “I can say with certainty that there will eventually be another Isaac game,” he said.

It was a promising tease, but he shut down any big expectations, saying there were no plans to make it happen anytime soon. According to him, a proper sequel would require “many, many years” of work—likely at least four to five years—to live up to what players expect from a follow-up to Rebirth. “I don’t know when. I would expect not for quite a few years.

It’s not something that I’m working on,” he said, shutting down speculation that a sequel might be in early development. Instead, he hinted that a spin-off or another Isaac-inspired game might be more likely to arrive before a full-fledged sequel. From a development standpoint, it makes sense why McMillen is hesitant to dive into The Binding of Isaac 2 just yet.

Rebirth has been fine-tuned and expanded over the years, keeping it from feeling outdated. Creating a true sequel would require more than just new content—it would need to justify its existence by pushing the game in a new direction, which would take time to get right. For now, McMillen is focused on Mewgenics, his upcoming roguelike project, which he has described as some of his best work to date.

He’s aiming to release Mewgenics by the end of the year, and once that’s done, he plans to take a break before working on a DLC for the game. Only after Mewgenics and its expansions have settled will he start considering the future of The Binding of Isaac. He even suggested that Mewgenics might scratch the same itch for Isaac fans, at least for the time being.

While this doesn’t rule out a sequel in the long run, it does reinforce the idea that McMillen isn’t rushing into it. In the meantime, Rebirth remains one of the most polished and content-rich roguelikes out there, and McMillen’s work on Mewgenics could offer something fresh for fans looking for a new experience.

So while The Binding of Isaac 2 isn’t on the immediate horizon, McMillen has made one thing clear: when it does happen, he wants it to be worth the wait.
