It’s been five years since the release of Borderlands 3, and fans are already waiting for Gearbox Studios to announce the next entry in the game.
With the year almost ending, there is a buzz that everyone’s first look at the next Borderlands game will be at this year’s Game Awards.
Borderlands 4 Reveal Coming to The Game Awards
Gearbox Studios boss Randy Pitchford confirmed Borderlands 4 is coming to this year’s Game Awards. He teased on Twitter:
Pitchford also confirms that the reveal will be more substantial, so fans can expect not only cinematics but also some gameplay footage. There is also a story moment tease in which fans get to see a sequence that happens between the end of Borderlands 3 and the start of Borderlands 4.
The Current State of Borderlands
As of 2024, the current state of Borderlands is admittedly not where it was when the series was at the peak of its popularity. Borderlands 3 was considered one of the worst entries in the series, and even though they tried to do something new with Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, the game didn’t exactly blow everyone away.
There was hope that a Borderlands movie would attract more interest in the franchise, but that movie ended up being one of the biggest flops of the year. No amount of A-list actors like Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black was able to entice audiences enough for what looks to be a by-the-numbers video game adaptation.
Some even say Blancett may have been too old for the role, but it was great for Kevin Hart to try something new besides being the Rock's sidekick.
What Do We Know about Borderlands 4 So Far?
No one knows exactly what to expect from Borderlands 4, but Gearbox did drop a new teaser a few months ago. Check this out:
That also came with an official story description:
“In this next installment of the definitive looter shooter, players will assume the role of a legendary Vault Hunter as they blast their way through hordes of enemies in search of new treasures to loot on an all-new planet.”
With the game’s main setting being Pandora, having Borderlands 4 take place on an entirely new planet will be a definite change of pace. Though the planet is new, based on the teaser, it does look like Pandora will be coming to the new setting, and it’s hinted that androids could populate this new place compared to the colorful biological creatures that call Pandora their home.
While the new setting is still shrouded in mystery, the reveal at The Game Awards may be able to explain a few things or at least set up the new planet so fans can have an idea of what to expect with the next Borderlands.
The Game Awards will take place on Friday, Dec. 13. Borderlands 4 is expected to launch for new-gen consoles and PC sometime in 2025.
