Gearbox surprised everyone by releasing the first Borderlands 4 trailer during Gamescom Opening Night Live’s presentation. The teaser trailer gave a glimpse into the chaotic world of Pandora and brought with it some juicy reveals.
It was filled with action, humour, familiar faces, and numerous Easter eggs that only a few fans could spot. From minor character references to hidden details in the environment, all these Easter eggs add depth and nostalgia to the coming game.
Handsome Jack in Borderlands 4 Confirmed?
A glimpse of a character who looks like the infamous Borderlands villain Handsome Jack flashed briefly in the trailer. And for just a moment, the face of the Hyperion Corporation president appeared to be covered by a world symbol.
Does this confirm some of the fan theories floating around recently? Could Handsome Jack be making a return in Borderlands 4 or is that a new character who just happens to look like him?
A Nod From The Past
Another juicy clue was a peek at some writing, possibly in Eridian. The Eridians are an ancient alien race, long thought extinct, but which still exert a mysterious force on the Borderlands universe.
According to a Reddit user called Pskought, the message translates to "HE IS WATCHING, BREAK FREE." This certainly looks like it could be a reference to The Watcher, an Eridian alien from previous Borderlands instalments.
A Wild Pop Culture Reference
When the trailer ends, a mysterious orange face pops up. Fans cannot guess who it is, but some eagle-eyed viewers think it's a direct reference to a popular movie or a video game that ties in somehow. We'll just need to wait for more info to figure out exactly how.
As Borderlands 4 is apparently set on a brand-new planet, there's plenty of room for the story to go in some surprising new directions.
And, according to Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, the trailer contains several hidden secrets that players have yet to discover. Some could be more than just Easter eggs, but actual clues on what's to come in the series' fourth instalment.
A Look to the Past
Other Borderlands 4 trailer Easter Eggs include references to previous instalments, such as Lilith's ship crashing into Pandora's moon, Elpis. This certainly suggests a connection to the broader Borderlands universe, much to fans' delight.
And A Clue For The Future
One of the scenes in the new trailer, in particular, seems to indicate a future plot point or even a new enemy. It's unclear for now exactly what the mask with a burning inferno in the background points to, but, given its prominent role in such a short teaser, we think it'll prove important.
