One of the worst video games of all time has feverishly crawled out of the abyss to torture modern gamers. Bubsy 3D, one of history’s most infamous terrible games, is making a surprisingly graceful return to modern platforms.
As part of a new collection, Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection, the truly horrendous 3D platformer has returned alongside its SNES predecessors.
This collection isn’t just a return to one of the most controversial platformers of all time, but also a celebration of the series. While Bubsy 3D is truly awful, its SNES counterparts are troubled games instead of downright insults.
Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection presents a “playable history” of the franchise. Alongside the games, fans or newcomers can discover development artifacts and even full interviews with the games' developers.
Furthermore, the new dev team has worked to “smooth out some of the games’ rough edges,” although most of Bubsy 3D’s edges will likely remain razor-sharp.
While it may seem weird to bring back one of the most hated games of all time to modern platforms, this Bubsy collection is a huge win for game preservation.
With games like The Crew becoming unplayable and Nintendo taking down huge ROM websites, game preservation is becoming increasingly difficult. Sure, many gamers didn’t ask for Bubsy to make a return, especially not Bubsy 3D, but a new official way to own the series means it’s even harder to disappear in the future.
Bubsy in The Purrfect Collection releases on Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series, and PC sometime in 2025.
