Bungie has given its view on the possibility that the US Supreme Court will overturn Roe V Wade, a landmark decision that protects the right to choose to have an abortion.

In a statement published on the company’s website, it has stated its support for the reproductive rights that Roe v Wade currently upholds.

Responding to a leaked Supreme Court draft decision that has sparked protests and widespread disputes across the USA, the Destiny and former Halo developer began the release by saying: “At Bungie we believe that everyone has a right to choose their own path and that freedom is expressed across all facets of life.”

It went on to immediately address the leaked decision, saying: “The leaked draft decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade represents a blow to freedom in America and is a direct attack on human rights.”

Affirming its commitment to “safeguarding the freedom and privacy of its employees” who might be affected by the decision, Bungie said that this had been an easy choice to make and one that fits with its company values.

The company added: “By creating a divide between those who possess the fundamental right to make healthcare decisions that are right for them, and those who do not possess that same freedom, this decision, should it become final, will have far-reaching consequences that will be felt for generations across socio-economic lines.”

The statement was closed by a list of organisations that support healthcare rights, which Bungie suggested people concerned about the issue could consider making a donation to, which included URGE and the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice.

Reaction to the company’s Tweet featuring the statement reflected the polarising nature of the ongoing debate, with several users applauding Bungie for its stance and others going as far as to demand season pass refunds.

Outside of the games industry, Amazon has made a similar pledge to support staff forced to travel to seek abortions if Roe v Wade is overturned.
