Breakdown

  • Xbox has confirmed an event that should reveal the new Call of Duty game
  • A badge found in MW3 files has been used to tease the game
  • This badge is known as Project Cerberus, the working title for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

Xbox has teased the reveal of the next CoD game, Call of Duty: Black Ops Gulf War. The Call of Duty 2024 game is set to be revealed in the coming months, and it looks like Xbox will be revealing it as part of the first Xbox/Activision Direct showcase.

Microsoft has revealed a new joint online event dubbed Xbox Games Showcase and “Redacted” Direct. Alongside showing brand-new Xbox exclusive games, the showcase will reveal a “ special deep-dive into the next instalment of a beloved franchise”.

The event is scheduled to go live at the following date and time:

  • PT: June 9, 10am
  • ET: June 9, 1pm
  • BST: June 9, 6pm
  • CET: June 9, 7pm
  • JST: June 9, 2am
  • AEST: June 9, 3am

While not confirmed, it seems obvious that the new reveal will be Call of Duty: Black Ops Gulf War. Not only does the event take place around the same time as typical CoD reveal events, but this marks the first proper Xbox Direct since Microsoft’s acquisition of CoD publisher Activision-Blizzard.

The “Redacted” image shows a military patch of three wolves on top of the US Congress building. This badge has been discovered in files for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 under the name “Project Cerberus”, the internal code name for Call of Duty: Black Ops Gulf War.

Alongside the Xbox announcement, the upcoming Black Ops game has already seen numerous leaks. We already know the Black Ops Gulf War guns list, Black Ops Gulf War perks and even grenades included in the launch version of the upcoming game.

If Xbox’s teases weren’t enough, there’s even been some corroboration from other outlets that Microsoft’s new event will debut the next CoD title. The Verge’s Xbox reporter Tom Warren confirmed on Twitter that the showcase will be followed by a Call of Duty event, and the reporter has an incredibly strong track record.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Gulf War is the first game in the series to have a three year development cycle after the series turned into an annual franchise. After the disappointing launch of Modern Warfare 3, the new one, this should be the return to greatness we expect from the prestige FPS series.
