The Call of Duty series is no stranger to including some different game modes in its annual releases that can break up the monotony of fighting in deathmatch after deathmatches. Ranging from Special Ops to Raids, many of these have come and gone, but there's one in particular that's withstood the test of time.
As attention moves towards the launch of Modern Warfare 3, players preparing for its reveal event continue to uncover information on the game's maps. Elsewhere, an actor has leaked what could potentially be a major campaign spoiler for Sledgehammer Games' latest project.
The latest revelation that's got people talking involves Modern Warfare 3's co-op mode. After weeks of speculation, a short sound snippet has pretty much confirmed the return of a fan-favourite mode.
Zombies return to Call of Duty
As part of Modern Warfare 3's reveal, players can now send text messages to a special phone number, which responds with potential intel on what the next game has in store. After texting the word Zombies, a sound clip of an undead opponent plays, all but confirming the return of the mode.
As expected, there's plenty of excitement among players hoping Modern Warfare 3 Zombies can deliver a similar experience to previous Call of Duty titles. One player responded to the above tweet by saying: "(I) hope the zombies mode will be like (those in) Cold War, and not Vanguard."
On the other hand, some players are concerned Treyarch won't have the ability to capture the same undead-slaying magic from its Black Ops series. One argued: "I'm afraid nothing will ever top Black Ops 3 zombies. People are always gonna go back."
The return of Zombies to Call of Duty would mark the first time the undead have featured in the Modern Warfare series. Typically, a Zombies mode has only featured in a game developed by either Treyarch or Sledgehammer Games that isn't set in the modern day.
If recent rumours are to be believed, Modern Warfare 3's Zombies will be based on Black Ops Cold War's Outbreak mode, meaning a more open-world offering instead of the more popular round-based structure. Of course, there's always a chance the developers add round-based Zombies into the game but for now, Outbreak 2.0 is the rumoured plan.
