One of the most anticipated games next year isn’t a AAA title. Instead, it is an indie RPG developed by Sandfall Interactive. It serves as their first-ever title, and it is looking pretty good for a debut entry.

Here’s everything you need to know about this enchanting new RPG that’ll definitely make waves next year:

European Fantasy Setting

The game takes place in a fictional world inspired by France’s Belle Epoque period, which is evident as Sandfall Interactive is a French-based studio.

The game’s protagonists, Gustave and Lune, set off on an expedition across this magical world to stop the Paintress. According to the early previews, the Paintress is a mysterious antagonist with god-like powers that can kill anyone of a given age she draws in the sky.

Star-Studded Voice Cast

For a game with an indie budget, Expedition 33 sure has enough to hire a star-studded voice cast for its main characters. Among them are talented voices from the gaming industry, such as Ben Starr, known for his works as Clive Rosfield from Final Fantasy XVI, and Jennifer English, who voices Shadowheart in the critically acclaimed RPG Baldur’s Gate III.

Hollywood actors Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings) and Charlie Cox (Daredevil) also lend their voices as Renoir and Gustave, respectively.

Flashy Turn-Based Gameplay

Expedition 33’s main allure isn’t just for its sprawling European fantasy world but also for its turn-based combat. Many players have compared it to ATLUS’ award-winning Persona titles, where the UI is sleek and stylish.

It’s more than just looks, though. Expedition 33 has adopted a unique form of turn-based gameplay that combines real-time mechanics. It includes quick-time events with timing-based actions that benefit offense and defense. If you’ve played Sabotage Studios’ Sea of Stars, this follows the same style but with more flashiness.

Over 30+ Hours of Content

For an RPG developed by a small indie team, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has over 30+ hours of content, which is bigger than most AAA titles released in the past few months.

On October 18th, Sandfall Interactive confirmed In a Tweet that the game also has a ton of side content for completionists. The 30+ hours of playtime may be worth more if you explore everything the game offers.

We don’t know much about the gameplay loop, but as a role-playing game, expect a long journey packed with memorable moments and epic battles.

Game Costs $50

One of Expedition 33’s biggest surprises is that the game doesn’t cost 70 dollars or more. As their first-ever video game, that says a lot about their studio's commitment to putting consumers first before overpricing its product. Who knows? The game might be worth more than $50 in content, story, and action.

It’s the perfect balance of a game that has a lengthy playtime, stunning visuals, and a cast voiced by talented actors.

We can’t wait to see Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 when it comes out next year.
