Now one of the best selling expansions of all time, CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty has sold over 5 million copies on Xbox, PlayStation and PC.
As the last hurrah for the controversial sci-fi RPG, Phantom Liberty launched alongside CDPR’s huge Cyberpunk 2.0 update, adding a wealth of new content while also offering a vastly overhauled main experience for players.
As it turns out, the Cyberpunk hype is still alive and well, despite an atrocious launch that sullied the reputation of a now-beloved game. In a recent tweet, it was revealed that five million copies of the Phantom Liberty expansion have been sold across all platforms.
Typically, DLC expansions do not sell as all well as Phantom Liberty, outside of World of Warcraft and The Sims. However, with the massive critical acclaim of the expansion, hype for Cyberpunk’s reformation and more, CDPR has released one of the best selling expansions of all time.
Phantom Liberty saw the addition of a brand new map in the form of Old Town, as well as the introduction of iconic Luther and The Wire actor Idris Elba to the cast as Solomon Reed. (Fun fact: you can find Solomon Reed out and about outside of the main campaign.)
While fan response to Cyberpunk 2077 was ruthless on launch, the response to the high sales of the Phantom Liberty expansion are extremely positive.
“Best gaming expansion ever imo, it surpassed [The Witcher 3) Blood and Wine imo,” one fan said. “The team never gave up on the game and it became a masterpiece,” said another.
In fact, the only issue that fans have with Cyberpunk 2077 now is that CD Projekt Red isn’t creating any more expansions for the game. Instead, the studio is hard at work at its remake of the original Witcher game, The Witcher 4 and its Cyberpunk 2077 sequel.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available to buy now for Xbox, PlayStation and PC.
