If you have been playing the game and want to find out how to fix Dark and Darker stuttering issues, we're here to help. Dark and Darker has made its return to early access after being taken down from Steam. The game is currently available via Chafgames and the official website but there are plenty of issues plaguing players including stutters, slow downloads, and more.
Do note that the game is still in early access so there are likely to be some performance issues that plague the game. The performance has improved compared to Dark and Darker’s initial early access release, but a lot of players are still struggling to maintain a stable 60 frames per second. We recommend playing at the lowest settings possible at the moment if you are unable to get stable frame rates.
Before we go over potential fixes for all the stuttering, consider checking out our Dark and Darker Warlock class guide if you want to try out the class. We also have a guide for the Bard class complete with the best perks and songs that you should be using.
How to fix Dark and Darker stuttering
Before you tweak any in-game settings, make sure that you restart your PC and close any background programs that may be interfering with the game. With that out of the way, you want to launch the game and go to your graphics settings and apply the following settings:
- Anti-Aliasing Quality: Low
- Texture Quality: Low
- Post Processing: Low
- Visual Effects: Low
- Anti-Aliasing: Low
The Render Scale is set to 100 by default, but you can lower it in increments for better performance. We recommend trying 85 or 90 to see if it helps significantly with your performance. Do note that lowering it too much will deteriorate the game’s quality.
You should also make sure that the FPS cap is set to a number that matches your monitor’s refresh rate. It is possible that you have the FPS cap set too low which is limiting your frame rates.
Change your Display Mode
Dark and Darker offers noticeably better frame rates in full-screen mode. Unless you are Alt-Tabbing constantly while playing the game, you should not play the game in Windowed Fullscreen Mode.
If you happen to have a 1440p or 4K monitor and are getting poor frame rates, you might want to play in Windowed Mode at a lower resolution. While this might not offer the best experience that you can get, it will offer a significant frame rate bump.
Update your graphics drivers
We recommend checking for any pending graphics driver updates. Outdated drivers can sometimes lead to performance issues, and we recommend using the latest graphics drivers to get the best performance.
As we mentioned earlier, the game is still in early access so performance issues and stuttering in Dark and Darker might stay for a while. Hopefully, our fixes and tips can help you get better frame rates and in-game stability until the game’s performance improves.
