All changes in the Dead Space remake

First and foremost, the Dead Space remake is running on an entirely new engine. The original game in the series was made on a modified version of the Tiger Woods engine, but this 2023 release runs on EA's bespoke Frostbite engine. As such, you can expect near-instant loading, stunning graphics, and truly next-gen performance.

On top of that, you'll get to hear a lot more of our hero, Isaac Clarke. Original voice actor Gunner Wright returns in the Dead Space remake, with plenty more to say. You can learn more about that in our guide on whether Isaac talks in the new game.

Narrative changes in Dead Space remake

Next, the story behind the original Dead Space has been altered slightly. There are no sweeping changes here, but rather a fleshing out of characters and scenarios.

There are new side quests and logs to collect, which all flesh out the events on the Ishimura before it was swamped by necromorphs. That's alongside a bunch of new voice lines to develop Isaac and his crewmates even further. The last narrative change is the adjustment of in-universe branding and advertisements, so they're more reminiscent of those seen in the second and third games.

Gameplay changes in Dead Space remake

Of course, the majority of changes in the Dead Space remake come in terms of gameplay. While it may seem that it retains much of the DNA of the original, a few tweaks have helped make things that bit more intuitive.

Most significant is a move towards metroidvania gameplay. It isn't especially hardcore, but certain doors and areas within the Ishimura are locked off with varying levels of security clearance. As you progress through the game you'll come across clearance upgrades that let you circle back to previously explored areas, going through new doors.

There's also a revamped dismemberment system, which makes slicing through necromorphs even more satisfying. Each enemy has various layers, ranging from skin to tissue to bone, letting you see which areas are weakest.

Lastly, there are a few more subtle tweaks. They range from improved thruster abilities to new alt weapon fire modes, meaning there's plenty for veterans to check out, even if you know the original game inside out.
