- Destiny 2 announces a crossover with Ghostbusters
- The crossover coincides with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
- This is the second Destiny 2 crossover after the Mass Effect event
Destiny 2 has announced a crossover collaboration with Sony’s Ghostbusters franchise, something most fans didn’t see coming since they never expected these two to cross their streams. The crossover will take place later this month, where players will be able to earn cosmetics based on this iconic franchise, albeit, one that looks out of place.
On the game’s official Twitter account, it was announced that the Ghostbusters crossover would be taking place next week, on March 19. While developer Bungie is keeping things close to the chest when it comes to this collaboration, the post did show what players can win: a weapon based on the Proton Pack, a vehicle based on the Ecto-1, and a Slimer skin for Ghost.
As to why we’re getting a Destiny 2 crossover with Ghostbusters of all things, well, there’s a new movie coming out. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will be coming out on March 22, so capitalizing on that with a popular video game makes some sense. It’s also worth mentioning that Sony owns both Bungie and the Ghostbusters license, so the crossover makes more sense.
Seeing the popular Bungie shooter do crossover collaborations like this feels odd, though that is something we might have to get used to. This isn’t even the first collaboration Bungie has done, since we saw a Mass Effect event with skins based on the game not too long ago. At the least, those are two sci-fi games, while Ghostbusters is more of a grounded fantasy story.
Things haven’t been great for Bungie, as the company laid off some employees late last year. Unfortunately, this also led to a delay in Destiny 2’s upcoming expansion The Final Shape, which was supposed to come out last year. Hopefully, this Ghostbusters crossover does some good for Bungie, especially since The Final Shape is still slated for a June release.
Destiny 2 is now available as a free-to-play shooter on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and PC. The Ghostbusters crossover takes place on March 19.
