Bungie’s next expansion for its free-to-play looter shooter Destiny 2 is set to release this February. However, numerous insiders believe Destiny 2: The Final Shape will miss its proposed release date.
Following recent layoffs, Bungie has been highly criticised by fans of Destiny and gaming in general. With the studio firing its decades-long composer, Michael Salvatori, fans have become unsure of the developer’s future.
Nevertheless, the core fanbase are still excited for Destiny 2: The Final Shape, but it seems that the expansion may be pushed later into 2024. Numerous insiders all claim the expansion will be delayed until sometime after February.
We reported on a Bloomberg piece revealing the fact that Destiny developer Bungie has internally delayed multiple projects. Alongside the push back of The Final Shape, the studio’s Marathon reboot has also been pushed into 2025.
Despite this, a recent press release from Bungie claims the Destiny 2 expansion is still scheduled to release on February 27, 2023. However, insiders have already instructed fans that this isn’t the case, a delay just hasn’t been announced.
Renowned industry insider Jason Schreier responded to the press release, telling fans not to get their hopes up. In multiple responses to fans, Schreier doubled down on the fact that the new Destiny content will not make the February target.
Destiny 2: The Final Shape comes after the game’s incredibly rough Lightbringer expansion. While not the worst expansion around, the rushed story moments and annoying characters infuriated fans of the series.
The Final Shape will see the return of Nathan Fillion’s Cayde-6, a character that was killed off back in 2018’s Forsaken expansion. With the sad loss of Lance Reddick, the voice actor of Commander Zavala, Fillion’s character is expected to be thrust into a larger role.
Destiny 2 is currently available as a free-to-play title on Xbox One, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and PC. The game can also been played on cloud gaming services, such as Nvidia GeForce Now.
