June 5, 2023: Need help beating Duriel in Diablo 4? Let us walk you through this tough boss fight!

The Diablo 4 Duriel boss fight occurs during the game's sixth act. While making your way through a besieged city that's filled with demons, the Lord of Pain himself suddenly shows up.

Our Diablo 4 Duriel boss guide discusses how you can defeat this Lesser Evil, as well various tips that should help you survive the encounter. Likewise, we probably don't need to mention it, but, this article does contain spoilers.

How to beat Duriel in Diablo 4

The Diablo 4 Duriel boss fight occurs in Act 6 - The Walls Shake. Basically, your character and their pals are roaming around Caldeum, which has been ravaged by two opposing armies. As you're trying to reach the throne room, the ground and walls start quaking, as though something lurks in the depths.

Then, as you enter a charnel pit filled with carcasses and maggots, Duriel emerges from the ground. It's quite a surprise since we haven't seen the Lord of Pain since Diablo 2. My guess is that this is fan service on Blizzard's part, considering that you also battle another returning foe.

Duriel boss abilities

The Diablo 4 Duriel boss encounter occurs in a pit, a very small arena with almost no room to move around. And the boss himself is quite... rotund.

Anyway, the point is that Duriel has punishing attacks and, with limited space, you really need to time your dodges and defensive skills accordingly. Apart from melee swipes, these are the abilities you'll want to keep in mind:

  • Burrow - Duriel will periodically burrow underground before reemerging in another spot. This is mostly for repositioning purposes.
  • Belly Belch - A frequently used move where the boss regurgitates a pool of stinking bile. Naturally, you don't want to stand on that spot, or your health will quickly get depleted.
  • Eater of Worlds - This is a devastating move that can potentially take out your character. Duriel will simply stomp before eating you. Multiple damage instances will occur before you're spat out, making this deadly if you're already low on health.
Duriel's spits and chomps need to be avoided at all costs.

Melee-focused characters (the unfortunate people who chose to pick a Barbarian) will probably have a tough time with Duriel due to the boss' arcing hits. Ranged classes will have issues, too, but mostly due to being squishy. One class that certainly succeeds is the Necromancer (which is also my main). In this particular battle, my minions were the ones whittling away at the boss' health, while I damaged it from afar.

And that's how you beat the Diablo 4 Duriel boss in Act 6. You're one step closer to the culmination of your journey and the final boss.
