Wondering if Silencer's ultimate cancels passives in DOTA 2? Silncer is a scary hero in DOTA 2, capable of preventing his enemies from casting their abilities. He's equipped with multiple silencing abilities and is an ideal pick against heroes that rely heavily on their abilities - but he's not all-powerful.
One question that cropped up multiple times in the DOTA community is whether Silencer's ultimate ability, Global Silence, disrupts the enemies' passive abilities, but there's a limit to what it can do. Silence and Break are two very different status effects in DOTA 2, but if you're wanting disruption, Silence isn't for you.

Silence vs Break in DOTA 2
As the name suggests, the Silence status effect prevents the affected unit from casting any of their abilities for a specific duration. Break, on the other hand, is the status effect that disables all the passive abilities of the affected unit.
Silencer's ultimate, Global Silence, only applies the Silence status effect on enemy heroes, so it can't disrupt their passive abilities. So no, Silencer's ultimate does not disrupt any passive abilities that the enemies might have.
If you want to disrupt those, focus on heroes with Break. Some abilities and items in DOTA 2 that feature the Break status effect and disable all passive abilities are:
- Silver Edge
- Doom (Doom) + Aghanim's Scepter
- Fan of Knives (Phantom Assassin)
- Sharpshooter (Hoodwink)
- Demonic Purge (Shadow Demon) + Aghanim's Scepter
- Nether Strike (Spirit Breaker) + Aghanim's Shard
- Nethertoxin (Viper)
