ID Software has revealed the next entry in the DOOM series, titled DOOM: The Dark Ages, a brand-new single-player adventure.

Announced during the Xbox Games Showcase for PC and Xbox Series, the new DOOM game features ID Software’s trademark frenetic FPS gameplay and over-the-top violence. Despite Microsoft’s acquisition of the game’s developer, the game is also coming to PlayStation 5 consoles.

Set in the distant past, the iconic Doom Slayer no longer battles demons on Hell-infected Mars bases but instead fights through dense forests and medieval castles. As the weapon of the ancient Gods, as revealed in DOOM Eternal’s DLC, the Slayer embarks on a unique journey for fans of the long-running franchise.

DOOM: The Dark Ages introduces a host of new guns and relies heavily on melee weapons, including a throwable Shield Saw that rips and tears through demon flesh. Players can also command massive mechs and fly on a winged Mecha Dragon equipped with fire breath and boosting jet engines.

“Wage war as one man matched against Hell’s legions in a dark fantasy setting expanding the DOOM universe,” reads the game’s synopsis. “Witness the origin of the Slayer’s rage and his rise from a kingdom’s last hope to Hell’s greatest fear in this pulse-pounding, cinematic prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal.”

“Go medieval on battalions of demons, made up of all-new threats as well as familiar foes reforged from DOOM’s classic bestiary. Bring their malicious forces to heel with heavy-duty shooter combat in a heroic story of epic proportion, powered by the latest idTech engine.”

DOOM: The Dark Ages releases on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC in 2025.
