Dynasty Warriors is the latest franchise to throw its hat into the roguelite pile, with Koei Tecmo announcing the Hades-like Warriors Abyss during Sony’s State of Play. Making this reveal even more special is how the game is now available, something no one expected. Considering how the Warriors games are often criticized for being too easy, this could change things.

As shown in the recent State of Play, Abyss takes the classic Warriors gameplay style and mixes it up with roguelite elements. Players will still be killing thousands of foes at a time as their favorite historical figure, but with the caveat of tough bosses that can kill them easily. It’s a good mix of the power fantasy fans are familiar with and that classic roguelite difficulty.

While we mentioned Dynasty Warriors, Warriors Abyss also has characters from Koei Tecmo’s Samurai Warriors as well. That’s right, China and Japan’s historical figures will be teaming up to kill thousands, if not millions, of monsters in the game. It’s not clear if these characters will play differently from each other, but the roguelite elements should help differentiate things.

Interestingly enough, the game will also let you team up with these other characters and use fancy finishers to kill most of the onscreen enemies. The isometric perspective makes this a bit easier, allowing players to see these goons get killed in a very satisfying manner.

Seeing Warriors Abyss go the roguelite method is pretty bold since Omega Force has mostly relied on the same gameplay style for most of the series’ life. However, some of those games have grown stale with fans, so changing things up like this should add some light to the abyss. Only time will tell if this game is up there with Hades and Hades 2, but it should be a good enough time.

Warriors Abyss is now available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
