EA isn't hanging around after splitting with FIFA. After rebranding as EA Sports FC, the gaming juggernaut has unveiled EA Sports FC Tactical, a new turn-based strategy game on its way to mobile.
Arriving in early 2024, players will have the opportunity to use over 5,000 footballers from multiple leagues including the Premier League, La Liga, and the Bundesliga. Instead of focusing on a mobile iteration of EA Sports FC 24, Tactical features an enhanced focus on strategy where players take turns to attack, defend, and perform a range of skill moves.
For those hoping for some competitive turn-based action, it's good news. EA Sports FC Tactical will feature ranked matches and online competitions to showcase their tactical prowess on the virtual pitch. For an additional layer of customisation, players can tweak their team with all kinds of kits, stadium designs, and balls to stand out from the crowd.
Following the reveal, EA Sports FC senior vice president Nick Wlodyka shared more information on what EA Sports FC Tactical has in store:
"EA Sports FC Tactical embraces strategic gameplay to create an all-new football experience that immerses players in the world’s game like never before.
"We’re excited to welcome fans of turn-based strategy games to join the club as part of the EA Sports FC player community, and look forward to sharing more on EA SPORTS FC Tactical soon."
EA's footballing franchise is no stranger to mobile devices. Shortly after the rebrand, FIFA Mobile received a free update switching it to EA Sports FC Mobile. Here's hoping EA Sports FC Tactical can deliver "authentic football action which could draw even more players into the world of EA Sports FC.
As the biggest new IP of 2023, EA Sports FC is already a far bigger success than many believed it would be. While the FIFA brand has been around synonymous with EA’s games for decades, it seems the studio no longer needs the football brand.
Turn-based games have always proved popular whether it's Hearthstone or Teamfight Tactics. We'll have to wait and see if EA Sports FC Tactical can rocket into the top corner of phone screens or end up taking an early bath.
