When they’re not trying to complete seemingly impossible runs through the game or raging at their own mimic tears, Elden Ring players can be a pretty lighthearted bunch.

After all, when you spend lots of time being mercilessly slaughtered by bosses you’re randomly trying to beat with a drawing pad or while only using one hand, a good sense of humour goes a long way.

Sometimes this manifests in the guise of an amusing message, a controversial hat tier list, or even a Thomas the Tank Engine themed mod, but currently it’s taking the form of an intense debate about what one NPC might be reading.

Do you find War Counselor Iji’s preferences difficult to read?

This discussion is the topic of a thread on the subreddit r/eldenring, which began with a post which contained an image of War Counselor Iji deep in study and asked the immortal question: “What is he reading?”

The poster’s fellow Tarnished were quick to offer a range of notorious literary works as possible answers to this query, with user Chrisnolliedelves rushing in to recommend Skyrim’s “The Lusty Argonian Maid” and successfully beating about half of the world’s population to the punch.

However, this didn’t stop a couple of users from suggesting alternative Elden Ring-themed names for the forbidden Elder Scrolls tome, with S3RP3NT- opting for “The Lusty Misbegotten Maid” and QuestStarter nominating “The Lusty Albinauric Woman.”

On the other hand, some users didn’t have time for any of this tasteless erotica, with HungrPhoenix declaring “Sun Tsu's ‘The Art of War’. Iji is a War Counselor after all," while thehartway alluding to Iji’s other profession by saying “Smithing for Dummies”.

User Zarg_Zarg_Binks took the lore-friendly propositions in a different direction, saying “He's proofreading the My Little Pony fanfiction Blaidd wrote before showing it to Ranni.”

Meanwhile, some players went for more meta proposals, with user BrokenSpartan23 going for an Elden Ring strategy guide, prompting Therustedtinman to retort “That’s like only two words, git gud.”
