Fallout fans are teaming up to remake one of the best entries in this acclaimed RPG series, breathing some new life into this classic. What makes this fan project more interesting is that the developers are hoping to bring this game to Steam, much like the Black Mesa Half-Life remake.
Project Arroyo is the current name for this fan-made remake of Fallout 2, as it completely overhauls the CRPG into something akin to Bethesda’s first-person Fallout games (via The Gamer). Damion Daponte, the project’s lead, has confirmed that they’re making fast progress thanks to this 100-man team, with new concept art and trailers now available for viewing.
Before fans get too excited for this fan-made remake, Daponte does acknowledge that there are issues to bringing this game to Steam. For starters, it uses the same creation engine as Fallout 4. This project is also a mod, so fans will need both Fallout 2 and Fallout 4 just to play this remake.
"We would have to figure out all the specificity with [Steam], making it so you require Fallout 2 and Fallout 4 and all of its DLC to get it and make sure there are no legal issues,” Daponte said. “But we'll see—we're still looking into it. I'm personally leaning towards Steam."
It will be interesting to see if Valve and Bethesda will let Project Arroyo happen, as we can’t imagine the copyright nightmare this fan game would be on Steam. Valve has let fans release Half-Life projects on Steam before, including the acclaimed Black Mesa remake, but that’s because they own Half-Life. A Fallout game would require more direct input from Bethesda and that could cause some problems.
Despite all that, there’s plenty of excitement behind this fan remake of Fallout 2 and we hope it comes into fruition. Those who haven’t had a taste of this post-apocalyptic RPG can pick up all of the Fallout games on PC right now.
