Square Enix releases a new mainline Final Fantasy entry every few years. However, sometimes a specific timeline becomes a fan favorite and warrants a revisit or remake—like Final Fantasy VII.

Final Fantasy XIV  was released in 2010, and now Square has just announced that they’re working on a mobile version of the game that was initially available for the PS3 generation.

Final Fantasy 14 Mobile Announced

As per the reveal, Square Enix has licensed the development of Final Fantasy XVI Mobile to Lightspeed Studios—the same developers who brought PUBG to mobile. The video even features an appearance from original FFXIV director Naoki Yoshida, who talks about the game coming to a new platform—and hopefully a new generation of players.

“Despite the adjustments, Lightspeed Studios is working with tremendous enthusiasm and dedication to faithfully recreate the story, duties, battle content, and other aspects of the game.”

Setting the Stage

Though Final Fantasy has had many entries over the decades, longtime fans know that each mainline entry in the franchise presents a rebooted, original story with some elements that manage to transcend every game, like the concept of magic and summon characters like Shiva and Bahamut.

The only thing fans are sure to get from Final Fantasy is that it will be a bombastic fantasy story with memorable characters and magical creatures.

Final Fantasy XIV takes place in Eorzea five years after a cataclysmic event called the Seventh Umbral Calamity. The player’s main character comes from a time before the calamity, and they must find a way to prevent an invasion from the Garlean Empire as Eorzea starts to recover and get back on its feet.

How Much of the Game will be Adapted?

With the Remake of Final Fantasy VII split into three games, fans should also expect this port of FFXIV to come in parts. According to Video Games Chronicle, the FFXIV Mobile is set to launch with 9 of the main game’s jobs. It’s expected that more of the original game will eventually be added to the mobile version, but it’s unclear how much the developers plan to add down the line.

It’s also worth noting that FFXIV is an MMORPG that has received constant updates over the years for the PS4/Xbox One generation. The latest patch, 7.1 Crossroads, is considered to be the biggest update in the game since Dawntrail, which came out last July.

With no release date in sight, it’s possible that Lightspeed Studios still needs more time to develop the game. However, with so many foundations already established, fans hope a larger look at the game will be released before the year ends.

No release date has been set for Final Fantasy XIV Mobile, but the game is now available to pre-register for would-be players. With the announcement happening now, fans can expect a release sometime in 2025.
