Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles isn’t even out yet, and this remaster has already gotten mixed views from fans. While many appreciate that the re-release is happening in the first place, the lack of content from its beloved PSP version is annoying. At the least, Switch fans will be happy to know that they can upgrade to the Switch 2 version free of charge.
Square Enix confirmed that fans who buy The Ivalice Chronicles on Switch 1 will be able to get the Switch 2 upgrade for free. This is very good news since the original Switch seems to have a lot more physical games than its successor. Collectors will be able to buy the physical Switch 1 version and get those Switch 2 benefits for free.
Unfortunately, it was also confirmed that Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles will just be a code in the box for Switch 2 owners. Many fans would have been upset with a game-key card, but this is even worse. At least game-key cards can be given or lent to other people; this is just an odd decision to make.
Luckily, as we mentioned earlier, The Ivalice Chronicles is going to have a true physical version on Switch, and seeing it get a free Switch 2 upgrade is great news. It seems that third-party companies are learning from the lack of free upgrade paths during the system’s launch period. SEGA is doing the same with Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, though the physical version is coming at a later date.
Despite the remaster’s mixed reception, Final Fantasy: The Ivalice Chronicles' existence is a net positive overall. Square Enix actually lost the original game’s source code all those years ago, so they remade it here and even added some new features. It will be interesting to see if the game’s additional voice acting makes this legendary JRPG better than ever.
