Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth is a hit on Steam, according to analysts. Despite releasing almost a year after its initial launch on PlayStation 5, Square Enix's behemoth RPG topped the charts during its PC launch window.
Circana's Mat Piscatella shared via social media that Rebirth had a "fantastic Steam launch." The GOTY nominee at The Game Awards was the best-selling game of the week ending on January 25 in the United States.
What's more, the twin pack that includes Rebirth and its predecessor, Final Fantasy VII Remake was third on the charts.
It was revealed last May that Square Enix was looking to "aggressively move away" from platform exclusivity following lukewarm sales to some of their most important projects in recent years. That included Rebirth, which failed to make it into the Top 20 best-selling games of April 2024, just in its second month of being out after its release on February 29.
The poor initial sales from the game continued a disappointing trend in Japan for the franchise. Where once a Final Fantasy release was a major milestone, Rebirth felt like an afterthought. It confirmed to Square that having the IP confined to the PlayStation 5 for the past few years was counterproductive.
On its PC release, Rebirth peaked at over 40k concurrent players on January 25, according to SteamDB. A solid 20k are still playing the game currently, so retention is relatively solid as well.
If you haven't played the second entry in the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy, you're in for a treat. In our review, we stated that the combat feels fresh and dynamic with plenty of worthwhile content, split between the main story and side quests, to keep you hooked for dozens of hours.
The ones still missing from the party are Xbox users, with neither Remake nor Rebirth available on the Series platforms, let alone Game Pass. It could be a matter of time, but it's looking likely that even Nintendo fans could get their hands on it first if rumors of a Rebirth Switch 2 port are to be believed.
