Final Fantasy XI R, a remake of the first MMORPG in the Final Fantasy universe built for mobile devices, has been cancelled.
According to Gamebiz.jp (via Gematsu), both co-developers Nexon and Square Enix noted that the project did not meet the required standard.

Final Fantasy XI Mobile Version Cancelled
It had been some time since we'd heard about the game, with screenshots leaking last year (via PocketGamer).
The game had been announced back in March 2015, but things had been conspicuously quiet in recent years.
Despite launching in 2002, the original version of Final Fantasy XI is still receiving content.
It's not all doom and gloom for Final Fantasy fans on mobile, though.
The success of the Final Fantasy 7: Remake means that we'll be getting another reimagining of that story on mobile devices in 2022, Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis.
