In-game events is not that common in DOTA 2 but when the developers do release one, it turns out to be an extraordinary experience. The entire DOTA community has stood witness to some of the most popular in-game events such as Diretide, Aghanim's Labyrinth, and Frostivus among others.
However, with Diretide not making a return in 2021, various speculations suggest that the community could in for a treat with Frostivus 2021. Frostivus is a recurring Winter event in DOTA 2 that has happened every year except for 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2020.
Having said that, let's dive in and check out what makes Frostivus 2021's release highly probable in DOTA 2.
Latest News
30 November 2021 - A bunch of new leaks has surfaced online since the confirmation of the second Battle Pass of the year. Based on these leaks, some of the probable new content that can be expected with the next update are:
- Aghanim's Labyrinth 2 - One of the best custom games in DOTA could be returning for its second iteration.
- Drow Ranger Arcana - An arcana for Drow Ranger seems a bit redundant when compared to the cosmetics available for heroes like Faceless Void and Morphling.
- A New Hero - While there have been no confirmations as of this moment, it has been highly speculated that Valve is working to release a surprise hero for the entire community.
Having said that, it seems certain that the developers most likely have huge plans for the second Battle Pass of the year which also coincides with the first round of the 2021-22 DPC Season.
24 November 2021 - Valve has recently confirmed that the developers are currently working on the second Battle Pass of the year. According to the leaked statement from Wykrhm Reddy, Valve has "got a special conundrum cooking" and apparently they cannot wait to share it with the community.
Additionally, the leak has also confirmed that the event will be released during the upcoming weeks of December. It is highly anticipated that the second Battle Pass of the year along with the winter event in DOTA 2 will be released on 10th December 2021.
Frostivus 2021
In case Frostivus does make a return in 2021, it will be the sixth iteration of the event in DOTA 2. The main factor that has made fans speculate the event's return after a break in 2020 is the fact that, unlike the previous year, 2021 did not offer a new edition of Diretide for fans.
Apart from that, a certain leak revealed by a data miner suggested that Valve has added Greevilings to the core game files. Given that Greevilings have always been an integral part of Frostivus, the addition could very well have been for the same reason.
This leads various fans to believe that 2021 could be the year when fans receive a new and revamped Frostivus.
Release Date
In the entire history of DOTA 2, Frostivus has always been released during the month of December and has run until the first week of January. Having said that, it is expected that the in-game event will be following a similar schedule this year.
If it does indeed arrive, Frostivus 2021 is highly expected to release between 12th to 20th December.
New Battle Pass
Considering the announcement from Valve earlier this year, DOTA 2 should be receiving a second Battle Pass before the year ends. While various fans have suggested that the free compendium released for TI10 was the second Battle Pass of the year, others believe that there will indeed be another Battle Pass in 2021.
Having said that, Frostivus is one of the most iconic in-game events in the history of DOTA 2. Allotting a Battle Pass filled with winter-themed skins and cosmetics could be a plan that interests Valve.
However, until and unless there is any official announcement regarding the release of Frostivus 2021, the event's entire existence remains mere conjecture.
