Gears of War: E-Day is the next chapter in the series, which was unveiled today during the Xbox Games Showcase.

Gears of War has been an explosive series, with intense action, solid gunplay, and a fierce, exciting story that has had players returning game after game. Now, with developers The Coalition working on Gears of War: E-Day for Unreal Engine 5, players are taken back to the brutalist beginning that kickstarted the narrative of the series.

With this guide hub, we'll update you with everything you need to know about Gears of War: E-Day from its release date, characters, story, and all of the latest news. With that in mind, keep your eyes peeled and come back to this page to check in regularly.

Gears of War: E-Day Release Date Estimate

With the newest Gears being revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase, a confirmed release date has not yet been set. Considering the last Gears game, Gears 5, was released in 2019, we can assume that it will be out sooner rather than later.

If we were to estimate the release date, we would speculate the next Gears game would be released in Fall 2025.

Gears of War: E-Day Story

Set 14 years before the very first Gears of War game, the story follows the defining moment of the Gears series: the first Locust's emergence on Sera. From what players can learn from the series, the world was far from prepared to deal with a threat like the Locust. So, this time around, The Coalition wanted to portray this alien threat as though they were "the monsters" that hid underneath your bed. AKA, the stuff of nightmares.

What further helps convey the monstrosity of the Locust is that with Gears of War: E-Day being a prequel, players will follow younger versions of the original heroes like Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago. With these characters not having encountered Locusts before, players will experience their visceral fear first-hand.

Creative Director Matt Searcy explains perfectly why the series is looking backward instead of forward: “Why E-Day? That’s the moment it all comes together. It’s the heart of the Gears universe. Everything that happens is shaped by this day.”

Gears of War: E-Day is, without a doubt, an origin story, and not just for the Locusts, but for the original heroes that players have come to know and love throughout the years.

Gears of War: E-Day Gameplay

If you've loved how gameplay feels for the mainline Gears games, Gears of War: E-Day will not feel like too much of a drastic change. Instead, The Coalition is working on improving the series "trademark third-person action", such as charging between cover "in life or death situations" and throwing caution to the wind in order to complete that all-important objective.

Yet, while there will be much familiarity, the game will still feel new and refreshing. Creative Director Matt Searcy confirms that to make this feel fresh, they will be tapping into new techniques, processes, and technology to make the gameplay feel bigger and better than ever before.

Gears of War: E-Day Platforms

Like the other games in the Gears series, Gears of War: E-Day is coming to Xbox (Xbox Series X/S, to be specific) and PC. At the time of writing, we're unsure whether it will be available on Xbox Game Pass.

Currently, this is everything we know about Gears of War: E-Day. In the meantime, check out all of the other games we covered that were revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase, such as Sea of Thieves Season 13, and DOOM: The Dark Ages.
