One of the most hyped announcements amid yesterday’s barrage of reveals from both Nintendo and Playstation came from the former, who showcased a trailer for a long-awaited remaster of the N64 classic Goldeneye.

While the new trailer for the James Bond-themed shooter’s remaster immediately whipped fans into a frenzy, things didn’t stay wholly positive for long.

This was due to the revelation that online multiplayer in the fresh iteration of the game will be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch version, leaving some players on Xbox disappointed.

Were you looking forward to playing some Goldeneye multiplayer on Xbox?

A press release on 007.com confirmed the exclusivity to be the case shortly after the reveal, saying: “Exclusive to the new Switch version of the 1997 title will be online play, allowing 007 fans across the world to take part in the popular four-person multiplayer mode together.”

This means that while a 4K resolution remaster will be made available via Xbox Game Pass, it won’t include one of the features that a lot of old-school fans have pretty fond memories of.

Reaction to this news from prospective players has been mixed, with some users on Twitter reacting very negatively, such as @razkaii, who said: “Well that announcement just went from 100 to 0 real fast! How can you have goldeneye without online play?” and @ItsDaniPlays musing: “Exclusive to the platform with the worst online ever? Yikes…”

On the other hand, user @FooseTV sought to remind players that the omission is due to technical differences between the versions of the game on different platforms, saying: “Everyone doesn’t seem to understand this, online play is built into Nintendo Online emulators.”

Users on ResetEra were similarly split, with FrakEarth arguing: “The nice fluid 4K xbox version won't have online play? The Nintendo version will probably run the same horrid, dated way the original game runs, and be hamstrung by the old control scheme and online connectivity restricted to friends with no matchmaking.”

Meanwhile, user VinylCassette64 mused: “I was convinced this wouldn't see the light of day again so I'm extremely happy that it's re-released, even if it's not the binned (Xbox) 360 remake; and with online play too!”
