How do I switch characters in Gotham Knights?
Fortunately, it's very simple to switch characters in Gotham Knights. However, you need to be in the Belfry Tower, which is the main base of operations between nightly patrols.
To do so, walk over as your currently selected character to the north-western corner of the Belfry ground floor. You'll see a rack of four suits, each one belonging to a different member of the Gotham Knights.

Walk over to the character's suit who you wish to become, and hold down the action button. On PlayStation 5 that's X, and on Xbox Series X|S it's A. Doing so will then put you in the shoes of that character, fully playable until you decide to swap again!
How often can I switch characters in Gotham Knights?
Since Gotham Knights' gameplay works on a nightly patrol structure, you can only change character at certain points. Namely, it's only possible during the daytime sections where you're in the Belfry Tower. This is in between open-world exploration and mission progression that takes place on nightly patrols.
As such, if you've already gone out on a nightly patrol as a certain character, you won't be able to swap out on a whim, like you can in Grand Theft Auto 5. Instead, you'll need to return to the Belfry Tower, end your nightly patrol, and change character. From there, you can go back out to the open world as normal.
Do I need to unlock characters in Gotham Knights?
Luckily, all four of the playable characters in Gotham Knights are unlocked straight off the bat. At the first point in which the game gives you control, you have to pick which one to use for the first mission. That decision is then locked for the duration of the guided tutorial, and remains that way until you arrive in the Belfry Tower for the first time.

After that, however, you're free to chop and change between characters as you please, with no specific unlock requirements. However, each character does have a separate Knighthood challenge, which you'll need to complete four times to unlock each character's glider.
Does progress carry over between Gotham Knights characters?
Even better, all of your progressions carries over between characters in Gotham Knights. Therefore, even if you're level 12 but haven't played a second as Red Hood, you'll have specific Red Hood skins and weapons ready to unlock that correlate to that level.
This is handy because it means you don't have to pick a main when first playing and stick with them for the rest of the game. Alongside that, it means that if you feel a certain character is too weak to begin with, you can always return to them later down the line once you've levelled up a bit.
As mentioned, however, Knighthood challenges and the glider unlocks have to be done separately for each hero. It's a bit of a grind, but it's worth it if you plan on using the gliders to get around Gotham City.
