Grand Theft Auto 6 Release: New Leaks Reveal GTA 6 Could Be With Us By 2020 On Playstation 5 And Project Scarlett

Details on the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 surfaced on Reddit yesterday, user JackOLantern1982 made a post revealing settings, themes and mechanics. His source of information comes from two friends who work for Kotaku and PC Gamer as well as non-verbal “confirmation” from a friend at Rockstar.

New GTA 6 leaks reveal a return to Vice City and a Narcos inspired storyline. Considering Rockstar hasn’t responded to the leaks or revealed anything regarding the game to date, please take everything down below with a handful of salt. However, Gamescom 2019 is coming soon and we could start to see information make it's way to the public.

What Does The Leak Detail?

Apparently, GTA 6 has been in development since 2012 (a year before GTA 5 launched on PS3 and Xbox), but wasn’t in the production line until the middle of 2015. Production halted and all teams were pulled in to focus on shipping Red Dead Redemption 2.

Developed under the codename, PROJECT AMERICAS, GTA 6 is set in both Vice City and a new fictional location based on Rio de Janeiro. Liberty City will also make an appearance.

Heavily inspired by Netflix’s cartel drama, Narcos, you play as an up and coming drug lord aspirant named “Ricardo”. You start off as a grunt doing drug runs from Vice City to the new fictional city and move up the ranks towards eventually building your own empire. It will discuss topics such as HIV, immigration and Fidel Castro.

JackOLantern1982 didn’t specify a release date, but claimed the game is only in the Pre-Alpha phase. He also states the game is built for next-gen consoles/PC only - with the PlayStation 5 and Project Scarlett being set for release in 2020, that looks fairly likely.

The Verdict

Jason Schreier, news editor at Kotaku replied to the post “Yeah this is fake”. With one of the main sources cited as someone who works at Kotaku, it’s not a great start to have it’s news editor come out and deny it.

While this does sound like an interesting concept, this is still based on hearsay and rumour. We’ll know for certain once Rockstar releases an official announcement.

Who knows, maybe they’ll reveal something at Gamescom 2019? If we're expecting to receive it by 2020, we will need to see some concrete information soon.
