Breakdown

  • Helldivers 2 will receive less frequent updates
  • New updates will be more spread out instead of the rapid patch cadence fans are used to
  • Arrowhead expects new patches to be bigger and more polished

If you expected Helldivers 2 to maintain its rapid update pace, think again. After months of frantic updates with tons of content, developer Arrowhead Game Studios announced plans to slow down on new updates.

While Helldivers 2 has faced several controversies, developer Arrowhead has worked hard to bring new content to the popular multiplayer game. After an extremely busy start, the developer decided to reduce its update schedule.

In an interview with PC Gamer, community manager Thomas Petersson explained that the pace of new updates will be more spread out than fans are used to.

“We want to take more time for this one and potentially between future patches, since we feel the cadence has probably been a bit too high to maintain the quality standard we want and you deserve,” Petersson told the outlet.

Petersson explained that patching Helldivers 2 requires a lot of planning and resources. With a reduced update cadence, future updates could be more substantial and polished than on release.

“Patching a lot can easily disrupt workflow and takes more resources than you might think,” he said. “It needs planning, implementing, monitoring, possible tweaking in hotfixes, etc. For this one, we prefer to stretch it out a little, hopefully with a good result.”

Helldivers 2 is currently one of the most popular games of the year, despite being delisted from over 170 countries. While this PlayStation controversy has pushed players towards piracy, Helldivers 2 remains intensely popular.

In just 12 weeks, Helldivers 2 sold 12 million copies, and its popularity has continued post-launch. The game’s launch was a surprise hit, managing to outsell AAA exclusive games like God of War: Ragnarok.

Helldivers 2 is currently available on PlayStation 5 and PC. No Xbox port is planned for the game.
