Heroes of Hammerwatch 2: How To Unlock the Dark Citadel

There's no shortage of things to do in Heroes of Hammerwatch 2, but few places match the Dark Citadel in terms of both difficulty and reward.

The huge doors are hard to miss, but getting through them is more complicated. Here’s everything you need to know to get in.

How To Unlock the Dark Citadel

To unlock the Dark Citadel, you'll first need to find the Architect, who holds the key to opening its doors.

The Architect can spawn anywhere, though you’ll frequently track him down in the Crypt.

The area is crawling with enemies, and those obelisks shoot out sharp ice shards.

This could be a challenge, so don’t let your guard down.

Remember that the map layouts are somewhat random, and the Architect doesn't always appear in the same spot.

You may need to grind through a few runs and pay close attention to your map to avoid missing him.

When you find the Architect, handle the enemies around him and get him out. It’s a good idea to be around level eight or have gear up to par since the enemies here can be pretty tough.

After you free the Architect, just return him to your town.

He offers to open the Dark Citadel’s front gate, allowing you to skip past the time-draining areas and head directly into the Citadel.

This reduces your time on future runs and makes heading to the Citadel more convenient.

He offers various modifiers that can alter the way the Citadel functions, making it easier or harder, depending on the challenges you want to face.

Here’s a rundown of the important modifiers:

  • Far Sight: Opens up the entire map so you can plan your next move.
  • Toppled Towers: Wipes out all the towers inside the Citadel.
  • Weak Defenses: Slashes the number of enemies in the Citadel, so it’s not as overwhelming.
  • Safe Corridors: Turns off the traps in the Citadel for a smoother walk-through.
  • Poor Training: Turns down the elite enemy spawns, so you don’t have to worry about them as much.
  • Righteous Flames: Gives you better odds of running into a Pyre in the Citadel.

You’ll need to chip in some Gold and materials to make these modifiers work.

The more modifiers you go for, the higher the cost, so select the ones that best match your playstyle and the difficulty you're aiming for.

Sticking with one or two modifiers is better, or the costs can go through the roof.

Once you unlock the Dark Citadel, the Sorcerer class becomes available, and it’s a big win for your guild.

After unlocking the Citadel, you’ll find the Sorcerer in the hall. Simply interact with him, and you’ll unlock the Sorcerer class for future runs.
