December 11, 2023: Read on to know how to swap party members in Baldur's Gate 3.

During your Forgotten Realms adventure, you will come across multiple companions that will be eager to join your party. However, we cannot have a party of 10 active members at once, so how do you swap your party members in Baldur’s Gate 3?

While you may think that you can change the composition of your party on the fly like many other RPGs, Baldur’s Gate 3 actually requires you to take a little break from the action to do it. It may be a bit time-consuming, but it proves to be a great tactical advantage that you can use in your favour.

Be prepared to have the best party composition for each situation you encounter by swapping your party members. While you are at it, you can also check out the best companions in Baldur's Gate 3 and the best weapons in the game.

Baldur’s Gate 3 only allows the player’s party to have four active party members. There are more companions available for you to recruit during your adventures, however, if your party is full when you do, they will be sent to your camp. This means that the camp is the place you will want to be to swap your party members.

Travel to your camp by fast travelling or by taking a long rest. Locate any of your active party members and interact with them. Instruct them to stay at the camp. This will free up your party’s space. Then, talk to the companion you wish to add to your active party and ask them to join you. They will become active party members.

This is a very useful ability you can take full advantage of. Imagine that you encounter a creature that you can’t beat with your current party. All you have to do is to fast-travel back to your camp and rapidly swap your party members. Once you decide to leave the camp, you will get the opportunity to choose any fast travel point, but most importantly, return to the exact place you were before coming to the camp. This will grant you a great strategic advantage over certain powerful enemies, allowing you to customize your spells, rest for a bit, and, of course, swap your party members as you see fit.

And that’s how you swap your party members! Pick your party strategically to fit both certain situations and your play style as well. Be sure to check out the Baldur's Gate 3 romance guide and the game's quest list.
