IGG has made history with the world’s first SLG international offline championship for Lords Mobile and Doomsday: Last Survivors.
The event, which took place in Phuket, Thailand, was the first of its kind for SLG games. It saw the Doomsday: Last Survivors World Championship being streamed live around the world on May 18th, and Lords Mobile the following day.
Much fun was had, both online and at the event, and there were tons of giveaways, games, and other festive diversions.
If you’ve taken even a passing interest in the mobile gaming world over the last decade or so, you’ll know that IGG is fond of shaking things up with collaborations and events—but this is the first time the studio has staged such an elaborate real-world celebration.
Lords Mobile, of course, is one of the biggest mobile strategy MMOs in the world, with more than 670 million registered users.
Doomsday: Last Survivors, which has previously won awards in five categories at the NYX Game Awards in 2023, is a grittier and more recent take on the massively multiplayer strategy game genre. It sees you attempting to survive in a post-apocalyptic wasteland infested with zombies and, worse, fellow humans with hostile intentions.
Online qualifiers for the two championships took place in March, with the top teams scoring an invitation to the final showdown in the tropical paradise of Phuket, complete with free travel and accommodation.
Some lucky players even got shipped out to the event as spectators on the same generous terms, receiving an additional US$1,200 worth of goodies each.
The prize pool for each competition was US$140,000, made up of cash, in-game currency, and expensive physical merch such as custom Bose headphones.
There were online and offline giveaways, too, allowing players to win a range of goodies including US$3,000 worth of Apple products.
At the event, meanwhile, there were cosplayers, game booths, celebrity creators, and a cameo from none other than Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, renowned strongman and star of Game of Thrones.
The Mountain appeared as an in-game hero and participated in mini-games with the audience.
If you missed out on all the fun, don’t despair. IGG has plans to run more SLG esports tournaments in future, so there’s still a chance that you’ll get to visit an exotic location for free, win prizes, and geek out with your fellow mobile game fans.
