It seems like a new Studio MDHR Project is in development. The Cuphead devs posted on their respective social media (Facebook, Twitter) that they are looking for “A Senior Unity Programmer with experience working on 2D games filled with character action, enemies, and boss combat.”
Fans quickly assumed this could mean a Cuphead sequel is in the works. The link posted by Studio MDHR leads to their Careers Page, which states that they are looking for someone to help them on their next big project. This is huge news, considering that the last Cuphead update we got was two years ago, which was the much-awaited DLC.
There’s a lot to unpack in this listing, with details involving 2D content creation and a knack for meticulous details. I don’t know about you, but that screams more Cuphead to me. Better yet, it’s a brand-new IP that could potentially exceed Cuphead’s success.
Studio MDHR received countless praises for the release of their run-and-gun platformer. It was the talk of the town when it came out 8 years ago; I remember the first time I almost threw my controller in frustration after failing to beat… a flower.
Part of its success was its highly detailed animation style, inspired by rubber hose cartoons of the 1930s. Studio MDHR’s deceptively vibrant art style was intentional. Fans were immediately lured into its novel concept but hilariously tricked into playing a gauntlet of challenging boss fights and tricky platforming levels.
It was initially launched for Windows, Xbox One, and Steam in 2017. Fans were hungry for more Cuphead content, but Studio MDHR had to port Mugman and Cuphead’s adventures to other consoles before its upcoming expansion. The macOS version came out in 2018, Nintendo Switch in 2019, and 2020 for PlayStation 4.
Two years after the PlayStation release, The Delicious Last Course Expansion came out. For Cuphead fans, it was a grueling five-year wait. Despite all that, it was worth it. The DLC, or the Delicious Last Course, received universal praise. It added a breadth of new content, more importantly, with its brand new area packed with plenty of difficult bosses.
Ms. Chalice added a refreshing take on difficulty, as her move set is far from Cuphead and Mugman’s parry ability. Her ability to dodge and become invulnerable is useful in harder sections.
The videogame is not the only Cuphead content we had over the years. A Netflix TV Series called ‘The Cuphead Show!’ expands on the lore of this twisted cartoon world. It gave new layers to its characters, including Cuphead, Mugman, and even the Devil himself. The show was a massive success, prompting Netflix to dish out two more seasons for three. The latest season came out two years ago; fans expect a new season soon.
We still don’t know much about this job listing, but this is a clear confirmation that Studio MDHR is working hard developing their next masterpiece.
