League of Legends World Championship is where the best of the best MOBA players duke it out, and despite the ongoing global pandemic, Tencent Esports is committed to the event going ahead.
2020's event was one of the best of all time, and it was spectacular to watch over the course of the Fall months.
Now, Riot has gone ahead and announced some details regarding this year's event.

Dates
While Riot has announced the city for this year's event, they have not confirmed an official start date as of now.
We can assume it will begin around September, which is typically when the event takes place.
City
Riot has announced that Shenzhen, China will be the host city for the League of Legends Worlds 2021!
Format
Below is how the 2020 League of Legends Worlds event was formatted via League of Legends Gamepedia.
We can assume it will be the same this year!
Play-In
Group Stage (Round 1)
- 12 teams participate
- Teams are drawn into four groups based on seeding
- Double Round Robin
- Matches are best of one
- Top two teams per group advance to Round 2
Knockout Stage (Round 2)
- 8 teams participate
- 1st place teams from the group stage each face a 2nd place team
- Matches are best of five
- Winners advance to the Main Event
Main Event
Group Stage
- 16 teams participate
- Teams are divided into four groups
- Double Round Robin
- Matches are best of one
- Top two teams from each group advance to the Knockout Stage
Knockout Stage
- Single elimination bracket (drawn randomly, 1st place teams face 2nd place teams, no two teams from the same group can be placed in the same half of the bracket)
- Matches are best of five
Prize Pool
The prize pool is yet to be announced, but we should hear soon!
Teams
In past years Riot has had 24 teams compete at the event.
This included 4 from China and Europe, 3 from Korea and North America, 2 from PCS, 2 from Vietnam, and 1 each from Brazil, CIS, Japan, Latin America, Oceania and Turkey.
We will have to wait and see if this changes for 2021!
