In comparison to previous titles, the Modern Warfare 2 Gunsmith features even more customisation options for players to modify their favourite weapons to suit their style of play. If you prefer running and gunning or a more passive approach to dealing with the opposition, the Gunsmith provides plenty of choices.
Ahead of the Call of Duty Next event and the Modern Warfare 2 beta, Infinity Ward has shared more intel on the new additions to the Gunsmith that includes full weapon overhauls, a simplified weapon level progression system, and so much more.
But before we reveal more on the Modern Warfare 2 Gunsmith, check out our other guides showcasing the best Modern Warfare 2 guns and the Modern Warfare 2 perks making their way to multiplayer.
How does the Modern Warfare 2 Gunsmith work?
Thanks to another intel drop from Infinity Ward, we have an indication as to how the Gunsmith will work in Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer. Firstly, players can select a total of five attachments on the weapon of their choice.

Secondly, one of the five slots is brand-new and showcases the new Weapon Platform feature that adds another layer of customisation to the entire weapon arsenal.
Modern Warfare 2 weapon platform 2022
A Weapon Platform groups a small selection of guns together to form a weapon family. Guns in the same platform will share unlocks which means you'll unlock attachments for a variety of weapons rather than the one you're using.
Additionally, the Platform utilises the new Receiver attachment slot. Infinity Ward says "changing a weapon's Receiver completely alters what the weapon is. It's considered a "new" weapon when building a loadout, but still lives within the same platform."
The video above shows the Weapon Platform in action. In this case, the M4 assault rifle is part of the Tempus Armaments Weapon Platform which includes the base version of the rifle, the M16, the FSS Hurricane SMG, and the FTAC Racon Battle Rifle.
Attachment unlocks have undergone a change. Players will unlock attachments for guns part of a specific Weapons Platform while optics, underbarrels, ammunition, foregrips, and muzzles need to be unlocked once before becoming available to use across the entire arsenal.
Does Modern Warfare 2 have a firing range?
With all of these attachments and Weapon Platforms to configure, it's only right that there's a place to test them before heading into battle. Modern Warfare 2 will contain a firing range where players can fine-tune their creations by shooting targets. Although it's a less significant addition to the game than an all-new way to customise your favourite weapons, the firing range is bound to prove popular with the community.
The new Weapon Platform system may sound confusing at first but once you've had a chance to experience it during the Modern Warfare 2 beta, it will make a lot of sense.
