Nu Udra, the Black Flame, is a terrifying new monster set to arrive in Monster Hunter: Wilds on launch day, February 28. The Apex of the Oilwell Basin, this cephalopod is a wild fusion of an octopus and something straight out of Lovecraftian horror.
IGN unveiled an early preview of Nu Udra today, sparking excitement among fans eager to see how this monstrous beast will send our hunters carting once the game launches. However, few were prepared for just how terrifying—and slippery—it truly is.
We can see Nu Udra in action, slithering—or rather, writhing—through the environment with eerie fluidity.
Nu Udra is the third Apex monster revealed for Monster Hunter: Wilds. A slimy, octopus-like creature, it uses its tentacles to attack hunters and can even coat itself in fire. It may not be a wyvern, but it can certainly breathe flames.

Its skeletal structure is entirely new, unlike past generations' classic "alien" monsters, such as Nakarkos and Yama Tsukami.
The good news? Nu Udra isn’t indestructible. Hunters can sever their tentacles, making for an incredibly satisfying fight. Greatsword users will relish the chance to cleave through its limbs.
With the Black Flame’s name and gameplay finally revealed, fans are already speculating what Monster Hunter: Wilds’ flagship monster, Arkveld, has in store.
We’ve already seen the other Apex creatures, most notably the ruler of the Windward Plains, Rey Dau. This massive wyvern, equipped with what is essentially a railgun for a head, delivered an intense battle during the game’s first open beta — and it was fantastic.
As for the Apex of the Scarlet Forest, Uth Duna, we’ve only seen previews of its fight rather than experiencing it firsthand. A massive aquatic leviathan, Uth Duna, commands the waters to its advantage. Imagine a fusion of a stingray and an eel, and you have a dangerous foe that will pose a serious challenge for new hunters.
These three Apex monsters will leave a lasting impact, testing our skills against their deadly abilities.
Monster Hunter: Wilds launches in just 30 days, and as you can tell, we’re beyond excited to dive in.
Thankfully, a second open beta is on the way to tide us over until then.
