The February 12 State of Play had a massive surprise for Digimon fans. Bandai Namco revealed Digimon Story Time Stranger, the latest entry in the Digimon Story series.
Sadly, the reveal was spoiled as Time Stranger leaked hours before the State of Play. Still, the trailer was surprising for the level of ambition it showcases.
Players will be able to traverse both the digital and real world in a JRPG that will feature turn-based combat. So if you're a long-time Pokémon fan who is willing to give Digimon a shot, this might be the perfect time to do it.
As you might expect, you'll be able to raise and carry a wide array of Digimon with you. Levelling them up and essentially becoming a Pokémon trainer. It's a unique departure from a core element of the franchise, as each Digi-destined usually has a single Digimon partner.
As the name implies, Time Stranger will feature some form of time travel mechanic. No details were explained during the presentation, but expect Bandai Namco to reveal more information in the near future.
The combat looks like your standard turn-based affair, with the trailer showing off Agumon evolving into more powerful Digimon such as Metal Greymon and Wargreymon. Even the legendary Omnimon is teased towards the end.
As for traversal, it might be a semi or complete open world. We could spot the character-created player (the trailer also showcases some form of customization) using multiple Digimon as a means of transportation, including riding on the back of a Garurumon.
Despite being the sixth entry in the Digimon Story franchise, it does not seem to be connected with previous titles in the series. So it's safe to say that Bandai Namco wants Time Stranger to stand on its own two feet and allow newcomers to jump into the world of Digimon with ease.
Digimon Story Time Stranger is set to release at some point in 2025 for PlayStation 5.
